Are you in swimming in debt? Are you worried that you might not be able to get out of these rough waters by yourself? If so, there are plenty of places you can go to get help. Many people go through a debt crisis at some point in their lives, so you don't have to feel alone or ashamed about your problems. Go to a credit counseling service, and talk to someone who can help.
About Credit Counselors...
Credit counseling and debt management services are offered by a number of different agencies. Typically, a credit counselor will sit down with you and go over your different sources of debt, and will then help you figure out a plan to pay it all off. They will try to set a debt payoff date, and will evaluate your spending habits to try and figure out ways to save more money each month.
Many of these companies also offer to make your debt payments for you each month to ensure that you don't accumulate any late fees or extra finance charges. In return for this service, you are expected to pay them a monthly amount and a small service fee.
Service Fees - beware of possible scams
It is normal to have to pay a fee for a debt management and credit counseling service, but there are some companies out there who charge way too much, and end up putting you further in debt. Before paying any fees, you need to do some homework on the debt management or consolidation company. Will the total service fees you are required to pay be less than the interest savings that the company promises? If not, then you are getting ripped off. One debt expert claimed that if you have to pay more than $50 in total service fees, you are paying too much.*
